The Unit of Allied Arts in collaboration with Youth Basketball Guyana has organised exhibition games involving schools from Georgetown and West Demerara. Two exhibition matches will be held on November 17, 2017 from 13:00 hours at the Leonora Secondary School. The first match will feature teams from St. Rose's High and Marian Academy while the feature match will showcase Leonora Secondary against West Demerara Secondary. The main objective of these matches is to reintroduce the sport of basketball to schools in Region#3 in preparation for the National Schools Basketball Festival that commences during the April term.
The Unit of Allied Arts sport development project involves a stakeholder approach which includes the respective secondary schools, Regional Education Department – Region #3, the National Sports Commission, the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation and the Youth Basketball Guyana organization. In addition to the exhibition matches, the project includes the training of teachers and students; the improvement of basketball facilities and the donation of basketballs.
The exhibition matches will be attended by officials from the Ministry of Education, Department of Education – Region #3, the Regional Democratic Council, National Sports Commission, Youth Basketball Guyana, the National Amateur Basketball Federation and the head teachers and PE teachers of the participating schools. The officials will make brief remarks prior to the commencement of the matches.
The West Demerara Secondary School has participated in the National Basketball Festival in the years 2010 and 2011, but has not participated in any matches since.
As an off-shoot of this initiative, both Leonora Secondary and West Demerara Secondary Schools have indicated that basketball will be used in the Schools' Physical Education programmes. West Demerara Secondary will augment its current PE programme while Leonora Secondary will use the basketball programme to launch its CSEC PE programme.
This project forms part of the Ministry of Education's drive to ensure that Physical Education and sport is available to all pupils and students in all schools of Guyana.
